Certain life skills need to be acquired by everyone in order to function in the world. These include the basics such as literacy and numeracy, as well as sitting nicely at a table to have a meal with others, and saying please and thank you. The next group of necessary skills includes life skills like cooking a healthy meal, mending a broken doorknob, or knowing how to drive a car. Beyond that, there are higher-order social skills like how to write a great letter, be a good host, or dress appropriately.

However, there are also other skills, that only a select few possess in really high quantities. These might be the ability to perform certain really impressive feats, like mastering the silk trapeze, achieving a black belt, or knowing how to survive in the wilderness. Some people play an instrument extraordinarily well, to the point that they will transform how you think of that particular instrument. Some have beautiful artistry with a needle, or their carpentry is a thing to behold. Still others have a fashion sense that is simultaneously perfectly on trend and wonderfully original.

Some of the rarest skills of all are the really high-level social skills, such as weaving a truly terrific yarn or making another person feel genuinely seen. We can all do these, just a little, but when you see it elevated to an art form, then it's truly a delight.
