In 2008, Jimmie Johnson's Chevrolet Impala served him well. On his way to the NASCAR championship that year, Johnson won seven times and recorded 15 top-five finishes. He also became the second driver to record three consecutive championships after Cale Yarborough.

Incredibly, this Ferrari was used in Formula 1 from 1975 to 1980 with minor upgrades each year. It won 27 races, three driver's crowns and four constructors championships. Not only a classic, but a phenomenal winner. Niki Lauda won two championships with this model, in 1975 and 1977.

The Lotus 38, with Formula 1 driver Jim Clarke behind the wheel, became the first mid-engined car to win the Indy 500.

A coupe in the Grand Tourer class, the E9 was produced by BMW from 1968 to 1975. It helped to put BMW on the racing map as it was very successful in touring car events around Europe. Around 30,000 were built in total.

The Breadvan... yes, well look at it. It does look like a delivery van of sorts. This was a Ferrari 250 GT modified by a privateer, Count Giovanni Volpi, for his Scuderia Serenissima racing team. And it almost beat the Ferrari racing team at the 1962 Le Mans endurance race. While 4th overall and ahead of the 250 GTs of the Italian marque, the Breadvan suffered engine failure.

Juan Pablo Montoya has won the Indy 500 on two occasions. His first victory came in 2000 and this second, and last, in 2015, driving a 2015 Chevrolet Indy Car. He holds the Indy 500 record for the most years between victories.

The first generation of the GT40 won the prestigious Le Mans 24-hour endurance race for four straight years from 1966 to 1969, which included filling out the top three positions in 1966. Only 105 were produced.

The Ford P68, also known as the F3L, was a prototype race car built in the United Kingdom. Despite its incredible looks and racing potential, it proved to be very unstable especially at high speed. It never won a race it entered.

Until the Lotus 72C appeared in 1970, Formula 1 cars were fairly bulky. The 72c was far more aerodynamic thanks to its wedge shape. Jochen Rindt became the only driver to win the Formula 1 championship posthumously after he died in a race before the end of the season.

After stints a range of racing series' around the world, including Formula 1, Alexander Rossi joined the Indycar series in 2016. Incredibly, Rossi won the Indy 500 in his debut season after starting 11th on the grid in his Honda Indy car.

The "Banana Car," a modified Ford Galaxie, was driven at only one race during the 1966 NASCAR season, as it was banned thanks to all the changes made. Fred Lorenzen was leading that race only to wreck the car before the end.

In 1996, the Reynard Ford set the fastest ever lap of the famous Brickyard at Indy, clocking 236.985 mph! It was driven by Arie Luyendyk.

The first turbo charged car to win a Formula 1 championship, the Brabham BT52 was also the first and only BMW-powered car to claim this prestigious title. It was driven by Nelson Piquet.

The fastest car in a straight line at Le Mans in 1978, the Porsche 935/78 Moby Dick (OK it does look like a whale from the side) clocked 228 mph. That didn't help much and the 935/78 only finished 8th.

The Eagle-Offenhauser was the first car to run a rear wing at the Indy 500. It brought victory for Dan Gurney in 1972.

In an effort to defeat the Ford GT40 domination at Le Mans in the late '60s, Enzo Ferrari introduced the 300 P4 in 1967. It was a formidable race car, winning at Daytona as well as Monza. The GT40s, however, had its number at Le Mans though and continued their winning streak.

Designed by legendary F1 designer John Barnard, the Chaparral-Cosworth 2K produced incredible downforce. With Johnny Rutherford at the wheel, it won the Indy 500 easily.
